Spinalonga is an island located in the Gulf of Elounda in the northeastern part of Crete, in Lasithi, next to the town of Plaka. It is quite close to the Spinalonga peninsula, which often causes confusion as at the same name it is used for both. During Venetian rule, salt was harvested from salt pans around the island. The island has also been used as a leper colony. Spinalonga has appeared in novels, television series, and a short film. You can select from a variety of boats, available to take you to Spinalonga during the day from three different ports: Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka.
